Hyaluronic acid for joints

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the synovial fluid (the fluid that lubricates the joints). In people with osteoarthritis, the concentration and quality of hyaluronic acid decrease over the course of life. By applying hyaluronic acid inside the joint, we aim to achieve:

  • Improved lubrication of the joint
  • Relief of pain
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Increase joint mobility
  • Slow the progression of osteoarthritis (in mild to moderate forms)

When do we recommend treatment with hyaluronic acid?

  • In mild to moderate osteoarthritis
  • When non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and other methods (physical therapy, lifestyle changes) do not provide sufficient relief
  • If a person cannot take NSAIDs due to side effects or other health problems
  • As a way to postpone surgery (such as the implantation of an artificial knee)

Are there any risks?

They are mostly minimal, but may include:

  • Temporary pain and swelling at the injection site
  • Allergic reactions (rare)
  • Infection (very rare, but serious if it occurs)

How long does the effect last?

The effect can last from several months to a year, depending on the person and the stage of the disease.
