Dermal fillers are minimally invasive aesthetic treatments used to reduce wrinkles, add volume to the face and lips and improve the overall tone and appearance of the skin. By injecting filler beneath the surface layer of the skin, a natural appearance is achieved without disrupting facial expression. There are permanent and temporary fillers – while permanent ones (most often based on silicone or collagen) can have a long-lasting effect, they are often associated with a higher risk of side effects, such as the formation of granulomas and allergic reactions.
New-generation fillers, based on hyaluronic acid, are currently the most popular choice. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our body and is responsible for binding moisture, but its amount declines with age. Modern hyaluronic fillers are biotechnologically produced, safe, biodegradable and of non-animal origin, which significantly reduces the risk of allergic reactions. Besides filling wrinkles, these fillers restore fullness, freshness and a youthful appearance to the skin without the need for recovery.
The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. After discussing the patient’s wishes, the filler to be applied is selected. A cream that will anesthetize the treatment area is applied to the injection site, or a local anesthetic is injected, depending on the agreement with the patient. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the filler is injected into the desired area with thin needles or cannulas. The advantage of working with cannulas compared to needles is that they reduce the possibility of hematomas. During the procedure, the patient is regularly informed about how much filler has been applied, and at any moment the patient may, if they wish, look at what has been done. The treatment itself lasts, depending on the area being treated and the amount of filler applied, from 20 to 45 minutes. After the filler is applied, the treated area is massaged and, if necessary, ice is applied for a few minutes. The treatment is painless thanks to the anesthetic applied beforehand. The results are visible immediately after the procedure. After the treatment the patient can immediately return to their everyday activities.
The duration of the results varies and depends on the type of filler and the site where the filler is applied. The results are usually visible for 4-12 months after the filler injection.
After a filler injection procedure, redness, bruising, swelling or tenderness may appear at the injection site. The redness usually disappears a few hours after the filler injection, while swelling and bruising most often disappear within a few days.
