Laser tattoo removal

The best method for tattoo removal

The laser method is currently the most successful and the best method for removing tattoos.
During tattooing, ink is introduced into the layers of the skin with a needle. When people experience changes in aesthetic attitudes, emotional states (tattooed names), work (enrolment in military or police schools), or when the appearance of the tattoo changes due to changes in the skin caused by stretching from pregnancy, weight gain or ageing, the wish to remove the tattoo arises.
Until recently tattoos were removed by surgery: the tattooed part of the skin was cut out or a layer of skin was removed with a Thiersch knife, which in both cases leaves visible scars. In addition, surgical excision cannot remove a larger tattoo. However, these procedures have since become outdated.

In laser tattoo removal it is important to use a special laser with an extremely short laser pulse duration, which matters because the pigment is destroyed by absorbing the energy of the laser beam. Each pigment absorbs a certain range of wavelengths. During the procedure a high temperature develops that melts the pigment but does not damage the surrounding tissue.

How long after getting a tattoo is laser tattoo removal possible?

It is not advisable to treat fresh tattoos; you should wait 6 to 12 months.

What does the laser tattoo removal treatment look like?

After disinfecting the area to be treated, we first treat the unwanted pigment (the tattoo) with an Er:Yag fractional laser that leaves dotted micro-damage on the skin surface. This step is preparation for the tattoo removal treatment, and this very preparation reduces the number of treatments needed to remove the tattoo. After that we treat the tattooed area with a Q SWITCH laser and act on the pigment with a specific handpiece. Which handpiece we use depends on the colour to be removed. Since a great deal of heat is released during the laser operation in this treatment, we use a special device that blows cold air onto the laser working area so that the procedure is not unpleasant.

What are the recommendations after the treatment?

After the laser tattoo removal treatment the treated area is coated with Bepanthen cream and protected with a dressing. This care is recommended to be repeated several times a day for the next 2-3 days. It is also advisable to protect the treated area from the sun for the next month.

How many laser treatments are needed to remove a tattoo?

Depending on the type of tattoo and the inks used, complete laser removal of a tattoo usually requires 2 to 10 treatments, repeated at intervals of at least one month.

What are the advantages of laser tattoo removal over the surgical method?

  • no scars
  • a painless treatment
  • minimally invasive
