Laser Varicose Vein Surgery Zagreb – no incision, fast recovery

Minimally invasive laser surgery for varicose veins - without a classic incision, with faster recovery

Laser surgery for vein removal, also known as endovenous laser ablation (EVLT/EVLA), is a modern method of treating varicose veins in which the diseased vein is closed from the inside using laser energy.

What are varicose veins and why do they develop?

Varicose veins (varices): when the valves in the veins weaken, blood "pools" in the veins.

The veins of the legs contain venous valves that enable blood to return to the heart. When these valves become insufficient, blood is retained and flows backwards, which leads to increased pressure in the vein. Over time the vein widens, becomes tortuous and visible on the surface of the skin.

The most common symptoms include:

A feeling of heaviness, fatigue and tension in the legs

Pain, tingling, itching or burning

Swelling around the ankles

Night cramps

Visible, bulging and tortuous veins

Changes in skin colour and structure in advanced cases

Important note

It is important to emphasise that, once valve insufficiency develops, creams, gels and tablets cannot "repair" the damaged valve. Conservative measures such as compression stockings and lifestyle changes can ease the symptoms, but do not remove the cause of the problem.

When does laser vein surgery make the most sense?

Laser vein removal (EVLT/EVLA) is most often applied in cases of insufficiency of larger superficial veins (main veins) and their tributaries, when a color doppler examination confirms that this particular vein is the cause of the complaints and changes.

The procedure is intended for patients who want to resolve the cause of venous insufficiency, reduce symptoms and prevent the progression of the disease, with a minimally invasive approach.

Advantages of the EVLT/EVLA method

A minimally invasive procedure without a classic incision

Quick standing and walking after the procedure

Lower risk of complications compared to classic surgery

Excellent aesthetic result without visible scars

Long-term effective closure of the problematic vein

When is laser vein surgery not the optimal choice?

Laser vein surgery is indicated in cases of insufficiency of larger superficial veins. In the case of smaller superficial veins, capillaries or isolated tributaries without insufficiency of the main vein, EVLT/EVLA is not the optimal method.

In such cases, other therapeutic options are applied, such as sclerotherapy or other specifically chosen methods.

This is precisely why a color doppler examination is decisive in order to choose the correct therapy and avoid an unnecessary intervention. Without precise diagnostics it is not possible to properly recommend a therapy.

Color doppler of the veins: the basis of the right decision

Ultrasound examination of the veins (color doppler) is an indispensable step before any treatment of varicose veins. The examination is painless and enables:

Assessment of venous valve function

Precise mapping of the veins causing the problem

Planning of the procedure - choice of vein, direction, puncture site

A decision on the need to combine EVLT with other methods, such as microphlebectomy

All methods of vein removal

Since we apply all methods of vein removal, for each patient we choose the technique that is optimal in that specific case.

The possibility of combining methods

If needed, EVLT can be combined with microphlebectomy – which removes visible subcutaneous veins through tiny openings.

What does laser vein surgery (EVLT/EVLA) look like?

The course of the procedure

Preparation

Arrival at the polyclinic, assessment of health condition and changing clothes.

1

Color doppler examination

Ultrasound examination and precise marking of the veins with a marker on the skin.

2

Local anaesthesia

Application of tumescent local anaesthesia under ultrasound control for complete painlessness.

3

Insertion of the laser

Insertion of the catheter and laser fibre into the vein through a small entry point on the skin.

4

Closing the vein

By activating the laser, the vein is thermally closed and becomes impassable.

5

Additional microphlebectomy

If needed, removal of smaller subcutaneous veins is performed for an optimal aesthetic result.

6

Completion and compression

Dressing and applying an elastic compression stocking for proper recovery.

7

Duration of the procedure

The procedure most often takes about 60 minutes, depending on the findings and the number of veins being treated.

Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under tumescent local anaesthesia, which is precisely applied around the vein under ultrasound control. The procedure as a rule is not painful, and if needed a relaxant medication can also be given.

A quick return to everyday life with clear instructions

Recovery after the procedure

Walking is recommended immediately after the procedure

You go home the same day

Wearing a compression stocking as recommended, most often around 4 weeks

For the first 1–2 weeks avoid running, jumping and lifting heavier loads

Return to sedentary work is possible within a few days

Bruises and haematomas may appear - they usually resolve spontaneously

Will the veins come back after laser surgery?

With laser surgery we achieve permanent results.

However, due to genetic predisposition and the nature of the disease, over time new varicose veins may develop in other places. That is why regular check-ups and timely action are important.

What to expect after EVLT/EVLA?

The procedure closes the vein that causes venous insufficiency, thereby reducing pain, swelling, the feeling of heaviness and the aesthetic prominence of the veins. The results are assessed clinically and by ultrasound at follow-up examinations.

The procedure is performed under local tumescent anaesthesia and is as a rule not painful.
Most often around an hour, depending on the extent.
Often within a few days, especially for sedentary jobs with the possibility of occasionally standing up and walking.
